While browsing through Bezalel Aloni’s work diaries, I came across a brief entry about Ofra’s performance in Jerusalem, Israel, on December 5, 1987, right around the time the album “Shirei Moledet 3” was released.

Behind that simple line in the diary lay a one-of-a-kind story shared with me by Oriyan Albo:

"Ofra

Back then, she was a young girl celebrating her Bat Mitzvah and went to the concert with her mother and her aunt, Vered Sternheim. Ofra was handing out signed postcards to the crowd, but Oriyan couldn’t get one and was heartbroken. Her mother encouraged her to write a sign: “It’s my Bat Mitzvah and I want to take a picture with Ofra.” Feeling too shy, she didn’t dare hold it up—so her mother proudly held the sign up toward the stage instead.

The concert ended, and Ofra had already left the stage.

Then a miracle happened: Ofra returned to the stage, walked up to the microphone, and announced that there was a girl in the audience celebrating her Bat Mitzvah and invited her to come up.

The excitement was overwhelming. Ofra sang “Chai,” hugged her, kissed her, and in the photographs, you can see Oriyan clutching her chest in fear of fainting from the intensity of the moment.

At that time, her father was abroad and had promised her over the years that she would meet Ofra for her Bat Mitzvah. When she went to bed that night, she refused to wash Ofra’s kiss mark off her cheek. She even went to school like that the following day, waiting until her father returned in the afternoon to show him that his promise had been kept.

Decades have passed since then. That very sign is still preserved by her today, along with the red scarf Ofra touched, and the photos immortalizing a young girl’s heart alongside the immense heart of a singer who never gave up on any fan.
